Marcello Alajmo was born in Palermo in 1961 and discovered as a self-taught player the diatonic accordion in 1996. Later, he attended numerous workshops in France and Belgium with some of the best diatonic accordionists on the international scene, including Perrone, Tesi, Pignol, Milleret, Brotto, Golder, Le Tron, Laloy, Van Mierlo, Cutting, and Bottasso, greatly expanding his technique and repertoire.
His musical research focuses on exploring the expressive potential of the instrument, leading him to become increasingly interested in the evolution of the diatonic accordion within new musical contexts, beyond the scope of traditional music.
He has often performed in theatrical settings and has been a member of several Palermo-based ensembles: “A glezele vayn” (klezmer music), “Le Cozze” (with whom he recorded the CD “Maîtres à penser”), “Cugini di mantice” (with Virginia Maiorana on accordion), and “Buatta Musique” (with Roberta Miano on violin).
For over 10 years, he taught diatonic accordion at the Arci Tavola Tonda school and, together with other instructors, animated the dance evenings of this historic folk association in Palermo.
In 2021, he composed the soundtrack for the documentary “Il pranzo di Francesco” by Pasquale Scimeca and Luca Capponi (prod. Arbash/Rai Cinema).
Since 2021, he has been part of the Velverde Trio, alongside Jimmy Sciortino (violin) and Gabriele Bazza (guitar), whose repertoire alternates between his original compositions and pieces from the European folk tradition.
